i want them thin, crispy and spicy.
that's what cornelius vanderbilt
said when he was served fried potatoes...
at the moon lake lodge hotel in saratoga springs.
okay, you will get you thin, crispy, spicy fries.
chef george crum thought
in fact, this mr. vanderbilt was a man of influence.
but what happened to the chef's surprise?
his guest loved them.
and he was not the only one.
in the restaurant crum opened later...
guests were happy to find his potato crunches...
in little baskets on the tables..
this inspired crum to offer little...
boxes with his potato crunches...
to take away.
so if it hadn't been for that unhappy guest...
crum's crispy crunches...
might never have seen...
light of day.
what can we learn from that story?
the better you solve a customer's problem...
the likelier your success.
it also teaches us about social proof...
influencers and marketing strategies.
it teaches us about real innovation.
and it teaches us that you shouldn't believe...
everything you read.
this often-repeated story...
is not true.
it sounds good though...
too good to be untrue.
